Quick Melting Temperature Chart
- 24K Pure Gold: Melts at 1,064°C (1,947°F)
- 999 Fine Silver: Melts at 961.8°C (1,763°F)
- Borax (Flux): Used to remove impurities and prevent oxidation
Step-by-Step Melting Process
- Sorting & Weighing: Clean the gold or silver scrap, remove gemstones or steel springs, and record the exact starting weight.
- Preparing the Crucible: Season a graphite or ceramic crucible with a light coating of borax powder to protect the bowl.
- Applying Heat (Torch / Furnace): Load metal pieces into the crucible. Apply high-heat propane, MAPP gas, or induction furnace heating until metal reaches liquid state.
- Adding Flux: Pinch borax flux into the molten metal. The flux pulls dross and impurities to the surface as a glass-like slag.
- Pouring into Ingot Mold: Pre-heat and oil an iron ingot mold. Carefully pour the molten metal in a continuous, steady motion.
- Quenching & Cleaning: Allow the metal bar to cool for 30–60 seconds, then submerge in water. Clean off excess slag using a wire brush.
Safety First
Always wear heat-resistant leather gloves, shade-3 molten glass safety goggles, apron, and work in a well-ventilated area to protect against toxic fumes.
